About
Talent presents itself in many forms. It can change and develop over time. Support is provided throughout your career.
Multiple grants are awarded and fellowship programmes set up to stimulate personal growth and individual professional careers. Support will be received to develop, both academically and in other aspects.

The support offered includes

  • Talent programme and MD/-PhD programme;
  • Mandema stipend for AIOS with a PhD degree;
  • Development and career planning;
  • Support for postdoctoral fellows;
  • Personal development of academics.
  • The UMCG has an active talent programme, the Junior Scientific Masterclass (JSM), that stimulates medical students to combine their medical studies with research activities. This enables them to obtain their MD and PhD degrees simultaneously (the JSM MD/PhD programme). For supervisors, these trajectories have proven to be helpful to start and continue their research lines.

  • We offer PhD students a training programme with many research-related courses, as well as a project management course and the Career Perspectives Series.

  • AIOS (MDs in medical specialist training) with a PhD can apply for a Mandema Stipend. This stipend will offer them the opportunity to build their own research line and the time needed to prepare a national and/or international personal junior career grant application.

  • Postdoctoral fellows are provided with support for their further development and career planning. A Postdoc Council serves the interests of the postdoc community.

    UMCG postdocs are offered:
    • An introduction event;
    • A postdoc development plan;
    • Participation in peer coaching groups with fellow postdocs;
    • Grant writing support.
    The services offered include:
    • Career orientation;
    • CV and interview training;
    • Career fairs with interested employers.

A differentiated career path

Personal development is stimulated and the following academic career paths are, therefore, supported:
  • Assistant professor;
  • Associate professor;
  • Full professor (for exceptionally talented academics).
Academics can develop based on four research profiles:
  • Research;
  • Education;
  • Healthcare;
  • Society and Valorization.
  • Exceptionally talented academics at the UMCG may qualify for a Talent Track position. Enrolment can eventually lead to the position of full professor.

    A special branch of the Talent Track is the Rosalind Franklin Fellowship programme at the University of Groningen (UG). This programme stimulates the academic careers of female scientists.
  • The UMCG offers the Educational Leadership path to employees who pursue a career in education or medical training. This involves a four-stage programme. A PhD degree is not required to enter this programme.
  • All researchers, ranging from postdocs to professors, can make use of the grant support services provided by the UMCG Research Office. The Grant Support Office is the facility to consult for all grant-related issues, including national, international, and/or personal grants, consortia, or public-private collaborations.

    The support offered includes:
    • Tailored funding advice (in person or per department/group);
    • Call-specific networking support and stakeholder analysis;
    • Funding workshops;
    • Preaward support;
    • Assistance with proposal budget and signatures.
